The racetrack's track features a 1km-long uphill straight, where 990cc MotoGP bikes reached speeds of around 340km/h (the record, set by Andrea Iannone during the 2016 race, is 354.9km/h), sharp changes in elevation, and very fast, blind, and challenging corners, such as "Arrabbiata 1" and "Arrabbiata 2." Also noteworthy is the Casanova-Savelli, a downhill right-left chicane, which is important for lap times. Another key point is the "San Donato" corner, the first of the track (located at the end of the aforementioned straight), where it is important to brake as late as possible.

The racetrack was built on an area of approximately 170 hectares in 1972, at the initiative of the Automobile Club of Florence, with the aim of providing a more suitable venue for the traditional motorsport competitions in the area, which had become too dangerous.

The track facility was inaugurated in 1974. In 1988 the circuit was purchased by Ferrari, which began a major renovation of the facility, equipping it with the best existing infrastructure and continuously updating it, while maintaining the track design, which was very demanding for the drivers, unchanged.

The evolution of the track was caused by the need to improve safety standards, while maintaining the initial configuration of 1974 unchanged.

The current president of the facility is former rider Roberto Benelli, while Paolo Poli holds the positions of CEO and general manager.

Antonello Coletta, Director of Ferrari GT Competitions and Corse Clienti, also sits on the board of directors.

The racetrack has won the award for best world motorcycle racing circuit five times (Best Grand Prix, 1995-1996-1997-2000-2011).

Due to its qualities, the Mugello international racetrack was chosen to host the only collective F1 test session of the current season, from 1 to 3 May 2012.

Almost all the drivers involved in the test expressed great enthusiasm for the beauty and difficulty of the Mugello track.

Mark Webber said: "In terms of satisfaction, 10 laps in the dry at Mugello are worth 1000 in Abu Dhabi."
