The circuit is considered one of the safest in motorsports thanks to its flat terrain and excellent visibility at every turn. It has hosted the World Superbike championship since 1991 and the San Marino MotoGP Grand Prix since 2007, a home race for Valentino Rossi, who grew up in nearby Tavullia.
The racetrack was built starting in 1970 and inaugurated on August 4, 1972 as the Santa Monica Raceway.
In 1993 and 2006/2007 the track was modernized, reaching the 4,226-meter configuration.
In 2012 the circuit was renamed Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, in memory of the Italian rider who passed away the previous year.
