The racetrack's track features a 1km-long uphill straight, where 990cc MotoGP bikes reached speeds of around 340km/h (the record, set by Andrea Iannone during the 2016 race, is 354.9km/h), sharp changes in elevation, and very fast, blind, and challenging corners, such as "Arrabbiata 1" and "Arrabbiata 2." Also noteworthy is the Casanova-Savelli, a downhill right-left chicane, which is important for lap times. Another key point is the "San Donato" corner, the first of the track (located at the end of the aforementioned straight), where it is important to brake as late as possible.
The circuit was built starting in March 2011 and inaugurated a few months later, on July 7 of the same year.
Until 2020, the track was 3,450 meters long with 11 corners.
Between January and April 2021 it was extended to 3,702 metres (13 corners) based on a design by Jarno Zaffelli, before reaching its current configuration of 3,768 metres in 2024.
